Round 6 Summary

Wednesday 19 June 2002

Sorry for the delay in the update from the weekend games, but I was waiting on the official results from the BARFL before sending out the report. Once again it was a mixed bag of results on the weekend, with the Wildcats letting slip their opportunity to keep in touch with the other "big three" when they were quite easily humbled by a fiercer, fitter and more determined Wimbledon outfit.

The boys are continuing to make things tough for themselves, and will come up against Sussex this week in another must win game, as we need to create a break from fourth to fifth. There really isn't a lot that can be said from the match. Wimbledon jumped us against the wind in the first quarter, and although we battled hard after that, the damage was done and we couldn't really peg back the margin. A few things from the day were glaringly obvious though, namely that they were first in, our committment wasn't there and it showed. We played from behind, played without any desire and weren't fit enough. I can assure everyone though that the brainstrust has already met this week to examine where we are at approaching the half way mark of the year, and why we aren't where we'd like to be. At the top of the list? Fitness, so it's time to hit the track and hit it hard. We don't ask for much, but from here on in until the rest of the year, training is going to be harder and sharper and hopefully we'll get the results hit September. Only a couple of blokes can really hold their heads high after Saturdays game, namely Quincey who battled his guts out across half back all day, and Belly who continues to come along in leaps and bounds. Boys there's plenty of work to do, but it's by no means the end of the world. If everyone gets behind Aubs, SOS, Ako and myself from here on in, and gives us 100% committment for the next two months, I can guarantee you it'll be worth it come the finals.

In the other game, the Fulham Tigers played host to the Bunker Boys, I mean the Raiders. And despite only playing two decent quarters of football for the day, the Raiders still managed to run out convincing winners by 15 goals. Again there is plenty of room for improvement though, and the boys, the majority of whom are new, will only get better over the next few weeks as the side starts to settle down a bit, with players to come back as well, and everyone gets used to each others style of play. As intimated though, the Bunker boys did have a bit of a day out with 10 goals between them, Jimi kicking three and myself unloading with seven straight. Jack Jess (and it was a pleasure playing with him) was dominant across half back, Whitts did well on the wing, although his shooting at goal needs some work, Andy Macfarlane provided a focal point at CHF, Crick picked up plenty of touches and we just had too many winners all over the ground, despite playing two short as we had no EU's available. As with the Wildcats there is plenty of room for improvement though, and we'll start building up now so that we ensure we are where we want to be come Grand Final day.

All the best,

Dogga.
